The bathyscaphe Trieste was designed by Auguste Piccard. On January 23, 1960 the Trieste, with Jacques Piccard, the designer's son, and his colleague, Don Walsh, descended on a nine hour journey into the Mariana Trench seven miles deep into Challenger Deep; the deepest dive in the ocean ever by a vessel, manned or unmanned.
She was acquired by the US Navy in 1958 and is currently on display at the National Musuem of the United States Navy. In 2015 she underwent conservation treatment.
